Enjoy the pictures from our Roadtrip to a trout and catfish farm with planned evening at a drive in theater.
Vic and Judy organized a trip to lead us on July 28th to take some scenic backroads from Brentwood down to the Tullahoma area to have dinner at Granny Fishes and, from there, on down to Estill Springs to the 3 screen drive-in movie for our pick of the three movies showing that night.
We met in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Cool Springs at 2:00 PM with full tanks of gasoline. From there we were to drive thru some good back roads to end up in Tullahoma at Granny Fishes, a trout and catfish farm for a delicious dinner. With the mighty 928S taking the lead, some of the Turbo's got to run under boost a few times on those narrow roads. On the way we were surprised with not only curvy and scenic roads, but we also experienced Miller's Grocery in Christiana. Miller's Grocery was in continuous operation as a country store for over 75 years in the once bustling whistle-stop community of Christiana, TN that included a 3-story hotel, a bank, a telephone office and some 15 other businesses. In 1995, the building was restored as an antique filled, country cafe featuring home-style Southern cooking and award winning "from scratch" desserts. The name "Miller's Grocery" remains in memory of long-time proprietor Mr. Stanley Miller and as a tribute to a by-gone era.
We we are passing Walters Grocery near Jack Daniels Distillery, then on to Wartrace, Tennessee Walking Horses. The Walking Horse Hotel and Restaurant is located in historic Wartrace. While the history of the hotel only goes back to the early twentieth century, the history of this area goes back even longer. Undoubtedly this area attracted many native Americans with its fertile land and abundant streams and rivers. The relatively mild climate was also an asset. The earliest Europeans were hunters, trappers, and mountain men. The first recorded land grants were bestowed shortly after the Revolutionary War. Some of the proud decedents of those early settlers still live in the area. The hotel was built by Jesse and Nora Overall in 1917. By 1938 Floyd and Miss Olive Carothers had bought it. Floyd Carothers enjoyed a reputation as a first rate horse trainer. Early in 1939 he purchased a work horse and trained him to show in the Tennessee Walking Horse shows that were gaining in popularity. That horse, Strolling Jim, won the first National Celebration held in 1939 in Shelbyville and was named the World's Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse. He was sold several times, but returned to Wartrace in 1947. He died in 1957 and is buried in the pasture at the rear of the hotel. Some of the large pictures displayed around the hotel are framed with the barn wood from the stables where he spent his final days.
Granny Fishes' House welcoming atmosphere, offers delicious food with wonderful customer service. The family dining atmosphere is traditional southern, and features Fresh Rainbow Trout from Nut Cave Trout Farm and Fresh Farm Raised Catfish. We took a short walking tour of the Nut Cave trout farm and then dined on some big fresh-caught trout at Granny Fishes. We had a great time just sitting and relaxing after dinner, and waited for the rain to clear outside on the covered porch.
